Did you ever wonder how the movie Pokkiri would turn out to be if the fact that Mahesh Babu was a cop was revealed right in the beginning and not in the end? One would imagine that the story would then be quite predictable with the cop going about his job of eliminating the underworld dons.
Director Puri Jagannath adds dramatic twists and turns to this story and dishes out a gripping fare called Golimar. Instead of Mahesh Babu, Golimar has Gopichand, who has seldom worked with big banners, playing the lead role. In the place of the hour glass beauty Ileana, we have buxom babe Priyamani playing the hero’s love interest.
Golimar is the story of Gangaram (Gopichand), an orphan who aspires to be a cop. With the burning ambition to don the police attire, he comes up the hard way, working at a tea stall in the morning and studying in the night.
Seeing his potential, his superior officer (Nasser) appoints him as the head of an ‘encounter special’ squad to get rid of two notorious underworld dons - Khalid and Talwar.
Gangaram, who goes about his job with ruthless efficiency is dreaded by the criminals and adored by the masses. He is also loved by Pavitra (Priyamani), an event manager who bumps into him during a New Year’s Eve party.
Gangaram kills Talwar and draws a sketch to get rid of Khalid, who operates from Malaysia. The director adds a twist to the tale at this point and takes the story to a different level. How Gangaram overcomes all the odds and kills Khalid forms the rest of the story.
Gopichand does justice to the role of an encounter specialist. His serious demeanor and a near deadpan dialogue delivery make him the perfect fit for the role of a cop.
Priyamani excels as the bubbly girl, who falls in love with Gangaram. Puri Jagannath should be credited for casting her in a very natural role of a girl who drinks when she is upset with her lover and dances to the beats of Teen Maar when her lover comes back. Her character in the movie is a revelation, moving away from the regular shy and girl-next-door image or an outgoing club dancer image that the heroines usually get to play in such movies.
Roja who plays the mother of Priyamani does a good job on her comeback.
Puri Jagannath packs a punch with the dialogues and they complement his absorbing screenplay. Be it the Dhamki dena padta hain dialogue by Gopichand or the scene where Priyamani declares her love for Gopichand at the railway station, the director manages to hold the viewer’s attention. Puri is also good with the comedy in the movie, most of which is situational.
Music by Chakri is disappointing and is perhaps the only blemish on this movie. The song Magallu Enta Mosagaalle is a poor copy of the song ‘Nasha ye pyar ka nasha hain from the Aamir Khan-Manisha Koirala starrer Mann.
Director Puri Jagannath comes out a winner with Golimar. It is an out and out entertainer that will keep you engaged for two and a half hours. Watch if before Vedam and Villian hit the screens.
