Ten migrant labourers working at the construction site of an engineering college near Sunguvarchatram in Kancheepuram district died after wall and ceiling of an under-construction stadium collapsed.

Police said 17 migrant labourers from Odisha were involved in the construction of a basketball stadium for the past two weeks at Kunnam village, about 70 kilometres from Chennai.

Around 3 pm, portions of the outer wall, pillar and  ceiling collapsed, crushing the labourers to death.

Soon after the incident was reported, fire personnel from Sunguvarchatram rushed to the spot. While five died beneath the debris, two died on the way to Kancheepuram government hospital and three died in hospitals. The deceased were identified as Sagar, Sagar, Masku, Tahinu, Shankar G, Chatrikanth, Pitham, Chatrugan,  Rangaiyya and Paijam. Nine bodies have been taken to Government Hospital at Sriperumbadur for autopsy. Two of the injured are undergoing treatment at Government General Hospital, Chennai.  Kancheepuram Collector Hanish Chhabra earlier in the day said nine persons died. Later, one injured person succumbed to injuries in GGH, Chennai.

The wall, which was being constructed with concrete blocks, collapsed even as classes were going on in the college. The stadium was being constructed at a size of about 140 X140 sqft, police said. The construction was being done by a private contractor, police said. It is alleged that the incident happened due to negligence.
