The Mortal Instruments: Lily Collins' trip to an unexplored world
The film is the big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's fantasy adventure series, The Mortal Instruments.

New Delhi: The Indian viewers will have a chance of witnessing some spine chilling performances this Friday in supernatural flick 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones'. Directed by Harald Zwart, the film features Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell, Robert Sheehan and Kevin Zegers in pivotal roles.

Harald Zwart explained the theme of the film, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is a supernatural action adventure fantasy film. A seemingly ordinary young woman discovers a hidden world and an extraordinary destiny in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the big-screen adaptation of the first book of Cassandra Clare's blockbuster fantasy adventure series, The Mortal Instruments."

Clarissa 'Clary' Fray (Lily Collins) has been living quietly in Brooklyn for as long as she can remember when she suddenly begins to see startling and seemingly impossible things. Just as suddenly, her single mom (Lena Headey) disappears after a violent struggle. As she and her best friend Simon (Robert Sheehan) search for her mother, Clary begins to uncover the dark secrets and darker threats in the hidden world of the Shadow-hunters, angel-human warriors who have protected humanity from evil forces for centuries.

Surrounded by demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other supernatural denizens of the Shadow World, Clary joins forces with young Shadow-hunters Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower), Isabelle (Jemima West) and Alec (Kevin Zegers) to locate and protect an ancient cup that holds the key to her mother's future. Discovering abilities and courage she never knew she possessed, the young woman surprises even herself as she proves to be a formidable opponent against an array of deadly adversaries.

What inspired Zwart to take up this story? "More than anything, I fell in love with the characters and the world the movie is based on. I was drawn to the excitement and the visual possibilities of the story, but my strongest connection was to the characters, especially Clary. In some ways it's really a detective story about a young woman searching for something that is lost. On the way, she discovers that much of what she's believed all her life is not true. Every day, the character has a 'what' moment that turns what she thought was true upside-down. But Clary is a very powerful young lady and she takes control of her own life. One of the things I love most about the character is that when someone tells her not to do something, you know she's probably going do it!"

The director further says, "As the movie is based on a book, Cassandra, the author had specifically mentioned that the actors playing the characters should fit the roles perfectly. When we auditioned Lily for the main protagonist Cassandra gave us an enthusiastic thumbs up as Lily completely fit the character of Clary Fray as thought and penned down by the author."

Lily Collins, the daughter of English musician Phil Collins, has become a known face after 'Mirror Mirror' and 'The English Teacher'. What are her expectations from 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones'? "In Mirror Mirror, I played Snow white and in the English Teacher I played Hallie, a popular high school drama student who comes in conflict with the protagonist. I've been able to choose out of the box roles which led me to 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.' In this movie I play a totally different character and I hope and wish my fans shower on me the same amount of love for this movie as they have shown me for my previous movies."

The book, on which the film is based, has been widely read. Didn't you feel difficulty in interpreting the character in a new way?

"I have been a fan of the book series even before I was cast in the movie. It is an amazing opportunity! I would love playing Clary for as long as I can! I'm a firm believer in whatever happens, happens, and I just go with the flow. Clary Fray is just a teenager living in Brooklyn when the story begins. But when her mother disappears, it's up to Clary to retrieve a sacred object that has been hidden away from dark forces. She goes from an ordinary girl to a heroine with all this responsibility and these new powers that she doesn't yet understand. She's in peril for the whole movie, but she finds these new relationships along the way to help her, and she's forced to question ones that she thought she knew."

The film is hitting the Indian screens on August 30, 2013.
