BANGALORE: The Jaga Jeevan Ramnagar (JJR nagar) locality near the KR Market has been provided with above average hospital facilities by the Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The atmosphere in the wards was that of a festive one as parents rejoiced over their new born babies. The hospital is staffed with three doctors and nine nurses. It has also been provided with four ambulances in case of emergencies. Despite it being a general hospital, it specialises in deliveries.Screening camps for diseases such as H1N1 and dengue are held every three to four months. The residents of the area are more than happy with the facilities rendered to them by the authorities. But its a disgrace to the people who make the hospital a success, for the BBMP has not maintained the surroundings even on a satisfactory level. One corner of the hospital area is strewn with garbage. The brick from the fence have begun to crumble down to red dust. The boundaries are not properly marked and slabs of stone leave the place cluttered.Adding to the deficiencies, the family planning centre is closed on most of the days. But on the positive side, the hygiene and the maintainence of the hospital has been excellent. A resident of the area, Kaushalya, informed City Express that the hospital was open 24 hours a day and the general cleanliness of the hospital is above par.She said, “I came here with a swollen hand due to high blood pressure and bloodsugar. The doctors took good care of me.” She added that several awareness camps about birth control as well as HIV-AIDS were held at the hospital. Also unlike many other BBMP referral hospitals in the city which are suppose to provide services free of charge but do not, the hospital follows a no charge policy.A visitor to the hospital, Nazima Banu, said, “I delivered my baby girl, Ambia, here five months ago. I was treated very well and had no problems with my delivery. The only charges I had to incur were that of the birth certificate and the bed charges.” Mary Daniel, a social worker who brings patients from all over the area to the hospital, said, “I am by profession a mid wife. The doctors here, mainly Komala, Jalija and Madhu are very helpful and patient. Also an added advantage of the hospital lies in the fact that medicines are sold here at much lower prices than the chemists outside.” Also outside the infirmary lies a sit-out with space where kids can play. The hospital has been extended to accommodate a park where the patients can take walks.According to the visitors the hospital is near perfect if only it wasn’t for the maintainence of the surroundings of the area. They request the authorities to ensure that the vicinity of the hospital is kept clean. The health officer of the area, Manjula, was unavailable for comments. The doctors of the hospital also refused to comment. The local corporator, CS Radhakrishna was also unavailable for comments.
