KOCHI: The project initiated almost ten years ago to supply water to the NGO quarters under the Collector’s drought relief fund remains stagnant. Sadly, not even once did the authorities took an effort to make it operational. The wells that were used under the project lie deserted and marred beyond recognition. One of the wells which is close to the Primary Health Centre is being used to dump waste.“The wells were dug in 1978. It was ten years ago that these wells were renovated under the Collector’s drought relief fund. The wells are covered with concrete slabs intended to pump water from the wells. There are six such wells and each of it was renovated spending Rs 2 lakh each and now only one well is operational,” said K R Jayachandran, former Thrikkakara panchayat ward member.Thrikkakara has been reeling under acute water shortage. The people living in close proximity to these wells do not get enough water as the KWA supplies water only from 7 p.m. till 9 a.m. the next day. There are times when they do not get water at all.“If these wells are well maintained it would be of immense help to more than 200 families living nearby. It would also alleviate the water shortage experienced in Thrikkakara,” he said.As of now the wells, that are accummulated with silt, could not be used as they are covered with concrete slabs. Besides, the motors that were installed to pump water from the well have rusted to the core which have made it completely unusable. “Some motors have been stolen by the anti-social elements,” said Prakasan, a resident. When contacted, the authorities seems to be ignorant of the project which clearly showed that it was something that has gone completely into oblivion. The unattended projects have always been a bane of Kochi and one more project have added to the list.
