KOCHI: Are you above 30? If so, think before you munch a snack which can take you closer to deadly diseases. If you are not worried about it, the government is. Shocked by the growing cases of diabetes, blood pressure, heart diseases, a programme ‘Jeevithashaily Roganiyanthranam’ has been planned to screen people having such health problems. The scheme is based on the adage ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Under the programme people afflicted with various diseases will be diagnosed and given necessary medicines. The programme is aimed at creating awareness among the youngsters who are vulnerable to diseases. The medicines will be given free-of-cost, district panchayat president Eldose P Kunnappilly said.The district-level launch of the programme being implemented by the National Rural Health Mission-Arogyakeralam project, the District Health and Family Welfare Society, Ernakulam, will be inaugurated by PWD Minister V K Ibrahimkunju on Friday. Eldose P Kunnappilly will preside over the function.The screening will help detect people facing various health problems at the early stage which makes treatment easy. Such people would be given treatment at Public Health Centres (PHC) and family welfare centres. Those who are facing serious illness will be treated at taluk level hospitals.The implementing agencies are determined to sustain the efforts with the help of other departments and voluntary organisations, NRHM sources said.The highlight of the programme will be on creating awareness among the people against consuming harmful food. For this, training will be given to health workers and camps will be organised under the supervision of doctors at sub-centre and public health centre level. Special clinics will be held once in a week.Trained ASHA or anganwadi workers will carry out the screening work. Those who are detected with high risk cases will be given unique ID number and health card. They can avail of the privileges offered at PHC and special clinics, the sources said.The facilities which are available through community health centres and Taluk hospitals will be given to these people through PHCs.There are 139 doctors, 907 supervisors, field workers and health workers, 3,275 ASHA or Anganwadi workers. The district has been allocated Rs 15 lakh for the year. The screening operation is aimed to be completed by February 2012.
