THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In yet another twist to the Sister Abhaya murder case, the Thiruvananthapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday found that the chemical examination report of the vaginal swab and smear of Abhaya had been tampered with. The CJM ordered chargesheeting of joint chemical examiner M Chitra and former chief chemical examiner R Geetha, who were found responsible for tampering with the work register of the Chief Chemical Examiner's Laboratory. The order was issued on a complaint filed by human rights activist Jomon Puthenpurackal based on a report published in The New Indian Express on April 12, 2007.The report, supported by a copy of the manipulated work register, had pointed out that the chemical examination result was tampered with to deny the presence of semen in the vaginal swab and smear of Abhaya. With Tuesday's verdict, CJM Cherian Varghese has added credence to the argument in the Express report that Sister Abhaya was raped prior to her murder on March 27, 1992."Prima facie, a case is made out against the accused as alleged for framing charge against them. Accordingly, charge under sections 465, 466, 471 and section 120(B) read with 34 IPC is framed against both the accused,'' the CJM said in his order. The court had registered a case against the accused on Jomon's petition on April 18, 2007. The original work register was seized by the Museum police from the lab as directed by the court.Later, the work register was sent to Hyderabad for scientific examination. The Hyderabad lab had found out eight corrections in the report, and the finding has now been endorsed by the court.During the hearing, six witnesses, including former state forensic director Murali Krishna, Y Surya Prasad of the Hyderabad forensic lab, former CBI DySP Varghese P Thomas and Express reporter B Sreejan were examined by the CJM court.
