CHENNAI: Just how wacky can the Blue Cross of India’s ‘Wacky Mongrel Show’ get? Slated for tomorrow at the CP Arts Centre, Alwarpet, pet owners may need to leave their own inhibitions at the door. Think fun titles such as ‘Dog that looks most like owner’ for starters. Or a well remembered ‘Dog that kisses his owner the most’ from last year. Sathya Radhakrishnan, Joint Secretary, Blue Cross of India says, “This show has been an annual tradition for over 15 years.” He explains, “As the name suggests, it’s meant exclusively for mongrel pets. It used to be called the ‘Well Dog Show’, but ever since last year, it’s been changed because we want to show people that the ‘mongrel’ is a more accepted term.” For the dog lover who prefers the alternative, the show’s tagline reads: ‘Proud to be an Indian? Adopt an Indian dog.’With 75 registrations in the book already and no registration fee, it is evident that this date with your pet is all about having a good time. No unnatural ‘tricks’, races or obstacle courses — just tail-wagging, prancing and puppy love. Of course, there are some serious titles as well, namely the ‘Best Rescue Award’ and the Survivor Award’. Pavithra Sriprakash, whose three-year-old mongrel, ‘Rowdy’ took home the Survivor Award last year recalls her pet’s story. “It was a really wet monsoon day about three years ago, and Rowdy (a puppy at the time) sort of washed into my office.” To cut a long story short, they decided to keep him. And for pet owners who simply want to let their dog do the talking, loud barks may well bring you brownie points in this competition. Sathya states, “Every dog will get a trophy and a goodie bag filled with doggie treats.” For those wondering, pedigree pets are welcome but will not be permitted to participate. For once, our mongrel friends coming together may just give them a complex.(There will also be an adoption counter at the event with rescued puppies from the Blue Cross shelter.
