There are several unique skills in the world. Painting is one of them. Its quality depends upon the painter’s experience and imagination. Ajoy Kumar Sarkar of Siliguri, West Bengal has achieved mastery in painting through his nails. After covering the canvas with pastel colours, the shapes are formed through nails, hence it is called nail painting. The record for the largest nail painting, that is 60 X 5 square feet, was achieved by none other than Ajoy Kumar. He slated this feat in the Asia Book Of Records in 2018. He painted for two days straight from June 8 to June 10. He used his fingernails as a paintbrush. Before this, he held the record for the nail painting made on canvas 54 feet by 5 feet in size. He also got recognition from the India Book of Records in 2019. He has also been recognised as an official participant in the Guinness Book of World Records.
These types of painting are traditionally known as nail brush painting. Ajoy Kumar is an art teacher by profession and holds no formal education from any art college. Despite this, he also teaches students watercolour, oil, pastel and calligraphy. His Art Academy is located in the main city of Siliguri. Along with this, he started doing nail painting. While talking to Local18, he said that he got the idea of nail painting while he was teaching the children.
“The idea came to mind while scraping extra paint from the canvas with nails,” said Ajoy Kumar while talking to Local18. He had to practise endless hours to gain mastery in this style of painting. He teaches his children that nails can be used as a brush or pen.
“Students have already started liking this ‘nail brush painting’. I want to leave an impression on the new generation,” said Ajoy Kumar.
