Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun is harnessed using various technologies for practical use. It is a renewable and abundant source of energy that can be converted into electricity or used directly for heating, cooling, and lighting. The future of solar power in India looks quite promising, with the country setting up a long-term target of achieving 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. With awareness about solar energy being the need of the hour, as alternatives get costlier, a solar museum at Hubli-Dharwad in Karnataka is doing a good job at it.
The Sun Ray Solar Museum at Hubli was founded by solar scientist Mahesh Shivashimpiger and is the first of its kind in the world. In the Sun Ray Solar Museum in Vijayanagar, Hubli, you will get to witness a Solar Radio, Solar Mobile Charger, Solar Iron, Solar Mortuary, Solar Lights, Solar Cooking Unit, Solar Dryer, Solar Go Ark Maker, Solar Sprayer, Solar Weed Cutter, Solar Bag, Solar Fence and many more. Here, perfect demonstration and training are given to everyone on how to use solar energy.
The museum aims to raise awareness and advocate for the adoption of renewable energy systems. With conventional energy sources such as petrol, diesel, coal, and electricity becoming increasingly expensive, scarce and depleted, the focus has shifted towards renewable energy. Among them, solar energy stands out as the best alternative. The museum showcases a wide array of renewable energy systems, including various makes, capacities, and origins from different countries.
Live demonstrations, seminars, and dedicated education and training courses are offered here to various groups, including school children, teachers, agricultural officers, bank officers, women, ITI and diploma holders, NSS students, and more. These programmes aim to provide hands-on learning experiences and knowledge dissemination. The initiative has received approval from the Education Department, Karnataka Milk Federation, Agriculture University, Agriculture Training Center, Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank, and HES-COM Training Center.
