Palakkad: On Thursday when Kerala was rocked by violent protests over entry of two women to Sabrimala temple, the state witnessed an instance of communal harmony in Palakkad district. A vehicle ferrying 15 devotees from Hyderabad met with an accident in the wee hours near Kuzhalmandam.
The accident was witnessed by a group of people who were going to the nearby mosque for morning prayers. They rushed to the site and rescued the devotees from the vehicle which had fallen into the paddy fields. They were then taken to the mosque and served refreshments there.
“The vehicle the devotees were travelling in was completely damaged and was taken to a workshop. We took the pilgrims who escaped with minor injuries to the mosque and served them breakfast and refreshments,” says Shahul Hameed Faizy who was present at the spot. The devotees resumed the journey a few hours later when the police arranged for a new vehicle.
The same day, Kerala witnessed violent protests as two women of menstruating age, Kanakadurga (44) and Bindu (42), had entered the hilltop shrine on the previous day. Sabarimala Karma Samithi, with the support of BJP, called for a dawn-to-dusk shutdown on Thursday across Kerala. Widespread vandalising of public property was reported from various parts of the state.
