Even if five students get together and take their northeastern classmates home for a few days, it will go a long way in stopping them from fleeing the city, said M S Thimmappa, former vice-chancellor of Bangalore University.
Thimmappa, who was also a professor of Psychology, lamented that society is not proactive enough. “We lack social gesturing. It is the immediate non-Assamese neighbours, friends, schoolteachers, classmates and parents of the classmates of the northeasterners who must take up the responsibility of their security,” he said.
Stating that the threat of violence is more powerful than the violence itself, he questioned, “How can a group of ministers and police commissioner get people to feel secure just by holding meetings at the Vidhana Soudha?”
“Once the miscreants are nabbed, then the exodus will surely come to a halt with the help of the public,” he observed, while terming rumour-mongering a ‘punishable crime’.
Meanwhile, a doctor from the Psychiatry and Social Work Department of the NIMHANS said when we combine the riot situation in Assam with sadistic elements who manipulate the weak minds of the people, rumours tend to find their way around very easily.
“Since the northeasterners are away from their land, they might have adjustment difficulties. In such a sensitive situation, any rumour can create havoc,” he said.
He also said that, at this stage, the people are not in a position to think critically and their judgement would fail. This, he said, is the reason why people are fleeing.
While stressing that the northeasterners are not ‘refugees’, the doctor expressed confident that migrants have a capacity to readjust quickly. “Compared to locals, they have a higher ability to adapt to different situations,” he remarked.
