The Congress has strongly objected to the Tamil Nadu government’s demand for the release of water for its crops in the Cauvery delta region when the state is hit by poor monsoon and drought.
KPCC President G Parameshwar said that the Tamil Nadu government has insisted that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh convene a meeting on the Cauvery water issue. He said the state government should immediately clarify on Tamil Nadu’s demand for 90 tmc ft of water when there is not enough water in the reservoirs of the Cauvery basin. Terming the demand unrealistic, he said that the state should make it clear that they can’t give water as there were no rains in the catchment areas. How can the state release water when the KRS reservoir is 102 ft as against 124.8 ft? he asked. Parameshwar said that the government should apprise the concerned of the situation in the Cauvery basin. The government should also write to the Prime Minister requesting him to intervene to end impasse between the riparian states.
