Toddy ban must not be implemented in haste: Mani

Finance Minister K M Mani has said that toddy ban should not be implemented in haste. He was speaking to reporters here on Tuesday.

The idea of banning toddy in the state is an ideologically proactive suggestion, Mani said, adding that, “If the ban is implemented in a single phase, it will  lead to the job loss of thousands,” he said.

“If the government intends to implement a ban on toddy, then it should ensure the protection of employees in the sector. The government should initiate steps to protect the employees like rehabilitating them to other sectors or finding alternative job opportunities,” he said.

Mani said that the Kerala Congress (M) steering committee meeting to be held on October 7, state committee meeting to be held on October 8 and the meeting of presidents of party Legislative Assembly constituencies to be held on October 9 will discuss the matter.

He added that the Kerala Congress could not stand by the policies of the Union Government that intermittently increased cooking gas price. “The sporadic hike in the cooking gas price will ultimately create difficulties to common people. The government should withdraw from such measures,” Mani said.
