Mumbai: Congress leader Narayan Rane's son Nitesh Rane was released on bail, 24 hours after he was arrested for assaulting toll booth workers. After his arrest, his supporters went on a rampage in Mumbai vandalising public property in Mumbai.
"Nitish Rane's bodyguards started beating toll workers. They asked them how dare they ask for toll from Narayan Rane's son," said an eyewitness.
Mumbai police have arrested 12 members of the Swabhiman Sanghathana, a social organisation headed by his father Narayan Rane, for vandalising private buses. Nitesh has however, given a completely political spin to the entire issue. He alleges that it is a political issue between Maharashtra and Goa and that he did not assault anyone.
Rane also claims that the ruckus took place after his security guards were roughed up by toll booth workers.
Nitesh also questioned pn why a toll is levied for entering Goa, while no such toll exists for entering Maharashtra from Goa.
But the Opposition and even ally NCP is now training their guns on Narayan Rane.
"Ironically the session is about to begin in Nagpur. And I am sure this issue will be brought up in the assembly," said Shaina NC, BJP spokesperson.
"Nobody can support this kind of activity done by any citizen, politician or a relative of a politician. NCP condemns this act," Nawab Malik, NCP.
The incident is not the first instance of a Maharashtra politician taking the law into his hands. Few months ago an NCP councillor vandalised a toll booth at Jalna after getting into an altercation. This incident once again highlights the vulgar display of muscle power.
