A two-year-old girl who was sitting on her mother’s lap at the front seat of a car died of suffocation after the airbag got stuck to her face following an accident.

The deceased child identified as Ifa, daughter of Nazir and Ramsheena, died in Chappanangadi village in Kerala’s Malappuram district. The accident took place when the car collided with a tanker truck.

Ifa was traveling with her parents, seated in the front of the car. The child tragically died from suffocation when the airbag inflated and pressed against her face. The seat belt also became entangled around her neck. Her father had returned from abroad just two days ago.

The other passengers in the car suffered minor injuries. Police from the Kolathur police station has started investigating the case. The child’s body has been kept at the mortuary at Government District Hospital at Perinthalmanna.

Police said that the mishap happened on Friday evening when the child was travelling along with her family members through Kottakkal-Padaparambu area, they said.

“The car collided with a tanker lorry and the airbag deployed suddenly under the impact of the collision,” police said adding that the child, sitting on the lap of her mother on the front seat, got suffocated due to the airbag deployment as her face pressed on to it.

Ifa’s body was brought to her place on Sunday morning following which her last rites were performed.
