THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Trenchless technology will again come into play in the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-aided water supply project. This time, the site is the very busy Pattom Junction, where the pipes would be laid across the junction. The work in connection with the pipe-laying would commence here on October 24.To start with, an open trench would be made first, from which the pipes would be pushed under the road. The trench would be made opposite the jewellery showroom located at the junction and would be taken across the road to the traffic signal. The trench would be made at a depth of 4 m, length of 6 m and width of 3 m. Once it is made, Mild Steel (MS) pipes of 1,200 mm would be first laid as the casing pipe. Inside that, a Ductile Iron (DI) pipe of 900 mm diameter would be laid. Since the trench is of 6 m length, it has been decided to lay a single DI pipe of 5.5 m, instead of going in for separate pipes.“This line would take water to the Medical College area. Already, we have laid pipes on both sides of the road, nearly a year ago, to which this pipe would be connected. The entire work is expected to take at least 30 days,” said K M John, safety officer of Electrosteel, the contractor of the work.As it is known, the pipes are pushed inside using hydraulic jacks. Four jacks of 70 tonne capacity will be used to push the pipes.“Once the Pattom Junction is covered, the pipes have to be laid across PMG Junction using the same technology,” said an official with JICA.It may be remembered that pipes have already been laid across Museum Junction and under the railway tracks near Thampanoor using the same technology by Electrosteel and L&T respectively.
