At least four non-Kashmiri students sustained injuries in a police lathi charge and paramilitary forces were called in to maintain calm after trouble broke out again at the NIT Srinagar campus on Tuesday.
Two companies of CRPF have been deployed and the situation is now normal, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted he spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and that she assured him of immediate action.
Sources said the trouble started when 3rd year non-local students, numbering around 400, stayed away from classes saying they wanted to stage a demonstration to raise academic issues with the administration.
Police were called in after the students refused to disperse even after the director gave an assurance that their complaints will be addressed. At this, some of the students insisted that they wanted to take out a march outside the campus, which was disallowed by police. An officer said this was done to ensure that no clashes happened on the campus or outside.
In the evening, the students allegedly used force in a bid to go out of the campus which the police again prevented on security grounds. The students then allegedly pushed around the DSP incharge and pelted stones at the police who resorted to lathicharge.
The situation, however, was brought under control shortly, the official said.
On Friday, the campus had winessed clashes between the Kashmiri and non-local students after the former celebrated West Indies win in the World Cup T20 semi final against India. After the clashes, the NIT authorities had shut down the institute till Wednesday.
In Delhi, HRD ministry officials said they were in touch with the management of the institute and the Director of the NIT has spoken to the students so that normalcy prevails.
