NAMAKKAL: As the truckers’ federations are gearing up for a strike which would begin from the midnight of August 18 in southern states protesting against diesel price hike and increase in road toll, various associations have extended their support to the strike.The strike call was made by the South Zone Motor Transporters’ Welfare Association (SZMTWA), affiliated to the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC). The main demands put forth by the association in this regard are: roll back of diesel price or revising the VAT levied on diesel, withdrawal of toll collected on the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway and a reduction in the insurance premium rate. When a few rounds of negotiations the All India Motor Transport Congress held with the officials of the Union Road Transport Ministry ended inconclusive, the strike became imminent.Meanwhile, various organisations have extended their support to the strike.The Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Federation (TNSLOF) said that it would participate in the strike. There are over one lakh sand lorries in the state.
