TUMKUR: Given its proximity to Bangalore, Tumkur proved to be a safe hideout for the criminals as the investigations have revealed that the terrorists hatched the plot to blast Chinnaswamy Stadium from here. It was second such instance as a family of naxals operating in Western Ghats too had taken shelter in a house at Bheemasandra on the outskirts of the city on Gubbi Road on NH-206. The houses on the outskirts proved to be havens as even the gang of four terrorists, led by Imran alias Yaseen Bhatkal, had lived in a rented house for one-and-a-half month at Mallasandra on Gubbi Road. The police sources confirmed that the old news papers which they had used to pack the bombs gave the police some leads. They used to come to a eatery at HMS Polytechnic through Ring Road to have food and might have befriended some of the students which is yet to be investigated. As the polytechnic, belonged to former congress MLA and present District Congress Committee president S Shafi Ahmed, the rumours of his alleged nexus with them spread like wild fire. But the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have clarified that the house did not belong to Shafi Ahmed. Ahmed told Express that the issue has been taking a political turn. “Though I am in no way connected to any illegal activities, we are dragged into this,” he said.
