It was a mixed bag for the participants on day two of the job fair held at Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here. While some of the job aspirants were ecstatic about the offer-letters, some were disappointed as their options were limited. The concluding day saw 51 candidates placed across various industries and job profiles of the 411 openings on offer. As the job fair concentrated on providing opportunities to freshers and those with substantial job experience, candidates with few years of work experience voiced the need for greater openings for them. “ I have a year and half’s job experience but since most of the companies prefer freshers, I have applied to only one company at the fair,” said M. Shruthi, an MBA graduate who was looking for openings in Human Resources department. Others like Atom Raju, a chemical engineer from Osmania University with three years job experience were happy with the end result. There were others who traveled from far to be at the job fair. Y Satyavathi, a B Pharma graduate from Rajahmundry had a unique problem though, “I had traveled all the way to apply for this specific drug company but they have asked only male candidates to apply. Now I plan to apply for a position in the marketing department of other companies.” Explaining the reason for selecting only male candidates, the P Durga Prasad, managing director of Redox Laboratories said, “We have vacancies only in the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production sector. This involves 16-hour shifts and heavy physical work. Concerned about the government laws and the effect on health of our employees, we prefer to hire male candidates. There are hardly any female candidates working in this sector in India.” Of the 200 openings, the company was hoping to fill in over half the quota by the end of day.The secretary general of FAPCCI, MV Rajeshwara Rao stressed the spirit of service in which the organization had arranged for the fair. “Not every student is picked up during the placements. Also, there are companies which do not participate in placement drives at various colleges. Our role is to bring together these set of people and help in finding the right job for the suitable candidate.” The organization plans to make the job fair a regular feature in its annual calender. The reactions of the recruiters also differed. “We didn’t get to interview many candidates who met the required profile. Of the 50 openings we had in offer, we have shortlisted only three aspirants. Our qualification requirements are B. tech with MBA and hence the gap,” shares G.L Ramesh of Pitti Laminations Limited. The day ended on a high point for some and misses for the others, providing a platform for the aspirants to reach out to industries across the spectrum.
