UCBL imbroglio ends for now

The dissolved elected board of directors of the Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd (UCBL), Rourkela, received a shot in the arm with the removal of nominated management led by president Prasant Sethi by the State Government.

Now they have raised the ante to declare null and void all decisions taken by the nominated body and hoped for early election to install a new management.

Former UCBL vice-chairperson Jyotshnamayee Samal and director Sridhar Mallick had fought a pitched battle for removal of  Sethi as interim court order directed the Registrar of Co-operative Societies (RCS) to take charge till final disposal of the case.

Claiming that the nominated president ‘unlawfully’ held office, Mallick welcomed the decision of the Government to safeguard interests of the bank’s stakeholders including depositors, shareholders and investors.

He urged the RCS to declare all decisions taken by the nominated president as null and void which included promotion of a host of tainted UCBL officials.

According to sources, Jyotshnamayee, Mallick and over a dozen former presidents of co-operative banks in Odisha met the Chief Secretary on Monday last. The next day morning, Jyotshnamayee and Mallick met  Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Earlier, following dissolution of the elected board of directors of UCBL, a nominated body led by Sethi assumed charge. Jyotshnamayee moved the Orissa High Court and the case was dragged to the Supreme Court which in its interim order asked the RCS to take charge.
