UDF government, Congress united on dam issue

KOCHI: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala has said that the UDF Government and the Congress will stand united in the Mullaperiyar dam issue and do everything to resolve it. He was speaking at a meeting organised by the Mullaperiyar agitators in Vandiperiyar on Tuesday.Chennithala said that the government will stick to its stand to construct a new dam and reduce the water level in the dam to 120 feet. He said that Tamil Nadu should not raise any objection for the new dam as it will be useful for everyone. Tamil Nadu will be given the same amount of water they are getting now, he said.He said that the Tamil Nadu Government should consider the safety of the people living in the century-old dam and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa should show some political maturity in the issue. He added that Kerala was hoping to resolve the issue through talks with Tamil Nadu.Expressing solidarity with people living downstream of the dam, magician Gopinath Muthukad staged ‘Jalapravaham’ a magic show at Vandiperiyar St Joseph English Medium School on Tuesday.
