Guwahati: The ULFA on Saturday expressed that it was willing to hold 'direct talks' with the Centre. The talks, it said, was to be held at the "earliest to solve the political problem" of Assam.
In a statement issued to a section of the local media, ULFA Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa welcomed the third round of talks between the Centre and the ULFA-appointed Peoples' Consultative Group (PCG).
Earlier, it had been agreed to work out modalities for holding 'direct' talks with the banned insurgent outfit within a fixed time frame.
"We hope that the assurance given by the Centre to hold direct talks with us becomes a reality soon", he said.
Rajkhowa thanked the Centre for "freely expressing their intentions on how to resolve Assam's problems and for assuring the people of state that directs talks will be held to find a permanent solution to their sufferings".
He also thanked noted literatteur Dr Indira Goswami, yesteryear footballer Rebati Phukan and all other members of the PCG for working tirelessly to convince the Centre of a negotiated political solution to the problems of the state.
"The PCG has worked confidently, firmly and both their actions and words in this task is indeed praiseworthy", the ULFA Chairman added.
During the third round of talks between the Centre and the PCG on June 22, the Centre had agreed to "consider favourably" the release of five top ULFA leaders and to work out modalities for holding "direct" talks with the banned insurgent group within a fixed time-frame.
