United Nations: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will travel to India this week on a three-day visit during which he will discuss current regional and global issues with the country's senior political leadership.

The Secretary-General will depart from the US on Wednesday for the three-day trip, which will include visits to New Delhi and Mumbai.

In Delhi, Ban will have meetings with the "senior political leadership to discuss current regional and international issues and matters of global concern," the UN Chief's spokesperson told reporters during the daily press briefing on Monday.

Ban would also receive an honorary doctorate degree from Jamia Islamia University.

His next stop would be Mumbai, where he would meet Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan as well as with a small group of key business leaders committed to utilising their expertise to promote the health of women and children.

Ban would also visit "health facilities where he will have the opportunity to witness first-hand the progress being made in communities through his discussions with women, children and health workers."

The visit would conclude with an event hosted by Millennium Development Goal Advocates Reliance Industries' Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Ray Chambers, who is the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Malaria.

The event would also include participation of representatives from government, the private sector, civil society, the creative community and the United Nations.

Ban had established the MDG Advocacy Group, which comprises eminent personalities from across the world who have shown leadership in promoting the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
