An unusual living arrangement between a couple ended in bloody murder in UP’s Ghaziabad. An estranged couple with a two-year-old daughter was sharing their house with the woman’s lover. But, the woman and her lover allegedly killed the husband following a number of fights about the affair, police said.
The woman, identified as Priyanka Gupta (25), and her lover Garjan Yadav (23) have been arrested for the murder of Shivam Gupta alias Sonu (26), a bike taxi driver. According to police, the incident took place on December 21. Priyanka strangled her husband while he was asleep while Garjan stabbed him multiple times with a knife, police added.
Police said the lovers disposed of the body in a nearby plot and cleaned the house, which is a rented accommodation, to get rid of the bloodstains. The body was discovered by a passerby in the Crossings Republik police station area, where a case was registered on December 22.
Police further said Priyanka and Garjan, who is a daily wager, began an affair when they were neighbours in Baharampur village. When Shivam found out about their relationship, Priyanka eloped with Garjan to his home in Ballia in March and also took her daughter, police added.
But, police said, out of love for his family, Shivam convinced his wife to return who agreed to come home on one condition: that Garjan would stay with them. The husband agreed to this living arrangement in the one-bedroom house, but the strangeness of the situation led to fights between the couple over the affair as well as Garjan’s presence, they added.
“He had agreed for the love of his wife and child,” ACP Saloni Agrawal told Times of India. But, fed up with the arguments and tense situation, one night Priyanka strangled Shivam when he was asleep, police said. Garjan, too, stabbed him multiple times with a knife following which the two wrapped the body in a blanket and disposed it of in a nearby plot.
“On December 21, when Shivam was sleeping, Priyanka strangled him with her hands while Garjan stabbed him with a knife multiple times,” the ACP was quoted as saying.
After the police found the body, Priyanka told them that Shivam had left for work at night, and that Garjan was a relative staying with the couple. But, the police found bloodstains on the stairs of the building where the three were living.
“Around 10 families lived there, so it was difficult to pinpoint blame on anyone,” Agrawal told ToI. Hence, the police did a benzidine test that detects blood where it may have been wiped. “We got positive results at their house on Monday. That’s when we detained Priyanka and Garjan. She ended up confessing to all of it,” the police officer was quoted as saying. The police also recovered the knife, which was allegedly used to stab Shivam, from inside a rice container in the house.
