The multi-model integration concept is the most effective form of development that can be adopted for urban transportation. Currently, Kochi will be developed as the first city in the country to integrate road, rail and waterways, all in one, said Tom Jose, private secretary, PWD.

Edappally and Vyttila have been identified for the waterways traffic. Once adopted, it will pave way for a better development. “These two areas will be developed in this format. The boat jetty at Ernakulam is yet another prospective area and we will look into the aspect in the near future,” he said.

Green field highway

For decongesting the roads especially along the Aroor-Edappally stretch, a green field highway has been proposed.

He was speaking at the session on urban transportation held at the Emerging Kerala venue here on Thursday.

Speaking on the various projects proposed for the state and for which the detailed project reports (DPR) have been nearly completed, he said these projects would soon be implemented.

Some of the projects that will be implemented soon include the Oceanarium project at Puthuvypu. “This project has a huge tourism potential and is nearly ready for implementation,” he said.

Water metro

The water metro project connecting various islands of West Kochi will also take off. “This is an old project proposed by the Corporation. National Transportation Planning and Research Centre has undergone its study,” he said.

Beach tourism

The beach highway project connecting Ponnani to Kozhikode is an immense scope for beach tourism. “This will also help the growth of cargo in the state,” he said.

Adding that there is a need to embark on more  bio-centric form of development, Tom Jose added that most projects will be eco-friendly.

Along with the need to have more private investors in Kerala, E Sreedharan, DMRC project head, said that there is an urgent need to be more transparent in government dealings. Transparency is the need of the hour, he said.

Vyttila and Edappally have been identified for the multi-modular model. Even boat jetty can use this model, said Tom Jose, private secretary to the government. The DPRs of several projects have been completed. For example, the Kochi Metro model will be utilised for many projects.

“With respect to Green field highway, we are planning it from Pettah to North Angamaly. Our plan is also to decongest Aroor to Edappaly, make it a parallel highway. We are planning to set up the Oceanarium as a tourism project at Puthuvypu, it is nearly ready for implementation,” he said.
