Q: My brother is awaiting +2 admission via counselling with 188.25 cutoff. He would be choosing courses related to electronics. Kindly tell me how important is NBA and NAAC accreditation of a course offered in a college in validating its status. Should we choose only colleges that offer accredited courses? Moreover, most colleges do not have the same number of faculty they claim in their websites. How reliable are the website details and tell me ways to access a college for its true quality.S N Nisha, ValparaiAccreditation by NBA or NAAC only means that the college maintains certain minimum standards as per the norms of the AICTE or UGC. As accreditation is not mandatory, many colleges don’t go for it. And therefore, there are a large number of good programmes that are not accredited. For instance, most of the courses in Anna University Guindy and MIT campuses are not accredited by either of them. Don’t believe the information provided in the website or advertisements. You should ideally verify it either by a personal visit or by enquiry from senior students. Q: My brother got 140 in Physics, 139 in Chemistry, 149 in Maths, and 151 in Computer Science. So, could you please give your valuable suggestion whether to choose BE or B.Tech in the counselling ? Salome, MoggapairChoosing BE or B.Tech depends on the field of study. First your brother should decide the field that interests him the most. The same field of study may be offered as BE in some universities and B.Tech in others. In Anna University, IT is offered as a B.Tech programme, while Computer Science and Engineering is offered as a BE degree course. In my opinion your brother should go for BE (CSE).Q:My son got 12293 rank under OC category. His cutoff marks is 191.5. Will he get good college in Chennai for Computer Science? I found in some colleges some courses are only accredited with NBA. Should a student necessarily get admission only in NBA accredited courses? - T K Raman, West MambalamAs there are a large number of good colleges in and around Chennai, your son may be able to get admission in one of them.Remember, there are so many good colleges outside Chennai as well.NBA accreditation is not mandatory and therefore a good number of colleges do not go for it. A point to note is that accreditation in itself does not guarantee good quality.Q: I am interested in doing Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology (B.Tech IT).
