While students took to the streets in Delhi to protest against the alleged language bias in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination recently, several prominent names in political circle and film fraternity got busy in discussing, debating and giving their take on the CSAT row.
So yes, if there have been politicos stating how the CSAT format discriminated against Hindi-speaking students and clearly worked in favour of those who knew English well, noted lyricist and Rajya Sabha member Javed Akhar disagrees with the so-called English-Hindi battle.
While speaking exclusively to IBNLive.com, Javed, recently in the capital to launch Phool Khil Jayenge, a five-minute video to promote child healthcare, said, "I don't agree with this English-Hindi battle at all. Whether your mother tongue is Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil or whatever, it holds great importance because that language gives you the roots. That particular language connects helps you to stay connected with your culture, your tradition, your history and your past. All this functions like a tree. Just the way a tree is not only about roots, but also about branches, we all can't branch out without English. This is not a matter of 'either, or'. The moment we fall into the trap of 'either' or 'or', we become wrong. So vernacular or English is also wrong. It can't be like that. We have to understand the fact that a full tree needs both roots and branches.
