Veterans go missing from chapters on freedom struggle
This is the latest controversy over books marking 150 years 1857 mutiny.

Ahmedabad: The names of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Vir Savarkar and Lokmanya Tilak have been omitted from the publications and calendars brought out by the Centre to observe the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence and the 60th year of Independence.

“They have omitted names like Sardar Patel, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and events like Bardoli Satyagraha,” says Law Minister, Gujarat, Ashok Bhatt.

A slew of objections were raised by some of the states in a meeting of the National Implementation Committee to commemorate the event.

The committee headed by HRD Minister Arjun Singh had drawn a calendar of events to mark the struggle for Independence. The calendar has also left out illustrious leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji and Vitthalbhai Patel.

Also the Madhya Pradesh government objected to the 1857 war being referred to as a mutiny in some NCERT textbooks.

The government however said the list of events is only a suggestion, and states have the freedom to include programmes with special focus on events, which happened in their territory.

What's your reaction?
