Beijing: Continuing the stupendous show of Indian boxers, Vijender Kumar stormed into the quarter-finals of 75kg middleweight event of the Beijing Olympics after overwhelming Angkhan Chomphuphuang of Thailand 13-3 in a lop-sided pre-quarterfinal bout at the Workers Gymnasium in Beijing Olympics.
Vijender went on the offensive right from the word go and easily overpowered his opponent as the Indian mixed superb reflexes with a controlled aggression, not giving any chance to the Thai.
After a cautious start and taking a 2-0 lead in the first round, Vijender went all out in the second round extending the lead to a healthy 6-1.
A hapless Thai, trying too hard, saw his punches going haywire in the face of nimble footwork by the Indian.
Angkhan could not score a single point in the third round while Vijender added another four making it 10-1 and the writing was clear on the wall.
In the last round it was Thai who got the first point but it was too late by then. Vijender landed three more accurate punches on his opponent to clinch the issue 13-3.
Vijender is the third Indian boxer to make the quarter-finals grade after Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar.
Vijender and Jitender will play their respective quarter-finals on Wednesday while Akhil plays his on Monday.
However, Indian athletes continued to put up a disappointing show with discus thrower Vikas Gowda and short distance runner Mandeep Kaur (400m) and the trio of JJ Shobha, Sushmita Singha Roy and G G Pramila in hepthalon falling by the wayside in qualification rounds.
Pramila came up with the best show among the three Indians to finish 28th in women's heptathlon, while Shobha and Roy came 30th and 33rd respectively.
Pramila secured 983 points in 100m hurdles, 903 in high jump, 639 in shot put, 894 each in 200m and long jump, 692 in javelin and 777 in 800m to finish with a total of 5771.
Shobha totalled 5749 (1033+795+732+922+922+735+725), while Susmita aggregated 5705 (963+867+613+948+948+663+808).
Ukrainian Nataliia Dobrynska won the gold with an aggregate of 6733, while compatriot Lyudmila Blonska (6700) grabbed silver and American Hyleas Fontain (6619) bagged the bronze in the event.
