VISAKHAPATNAM: Air India will start operations to Dubai from the port city via Hyderabad and the first flight is scheduled to take off on March 27.Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Rajya Sabha member T Subbarami Reddy said that Union civil aviation minister Ajit Singh would inaugurate the first flight. He said he has already discussed with the Union government the proposal for modernisation of the airport here and for night landing facility. Against just one flight in 1999, the airport here now handles 40 services connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Tirupati, he said adding he would try to bring more airliners like Spicejet, Indigo and Air Arabia to operate flights to and from Visakhapatnam.Subbarami Reddy said Visakhapatnam airport has an integrated terminal, which can handle both national and international flights.He said the Visakhapatnam- Dubai flight will depart at 6.30 p.m. from Visakhapatnam on a regular basis and the journey time would take about 4 hours and the flight will have a capacity of around 150 passengers.Answering a query, Reddy said he had requested the Railway Board to introduce a super fast weekly train to Chennai. He said he also made proposals for Hyderabad- Howrah, Secunderabad- Guwahati weekly trains via Visakhapatnam and Visakhapatnam- Mumbai express train via Raipur apart from Vizag-Shirdi weekly train in this year's railway budget. The MP said he had sought Rs 25 crore for development of Visakhapatnam railway station. He said 40 lakh saplings would be planted in the city in five years.
