CUMBUM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala will build a new dam across Periyar river with public donations if the Prime Minister and the Centre fail to initiate efforts to construct a new dam, former Chief Minister of Kerala V S Achuthanandan said on Wednesday. Addressing a press meet after inspecting the Mullaiperiyar dam along with former ministers of the previous LDF regime, he argued that the dam was “weak” and Kerala, as early as in 1976, had approached the Centre for a new dam. He said that if the dam burst, the most important hydropower production centre of Kerala, the Idukki dam, will also break. It would cause immeasurable damage to those living on the river banks. He also warned that if a decision was not taken on the issue soon, LDF to mark protest would form a human chain extending from the dam site to Arabian sea shores.
