Why Kerala’s Poovanpara Bridge Has Become A Major Suicide Point
Reports suggest that at least one suicide occurs here every month at this location.

he Vamanapuram river in southern Kerala flows through the northern parts of Thiruvananthapuram district. It is the longest river in the district. Poovanpara Bridge, located at Attingal on the national highway across the river, has become a major suicide spot in the area. This news is currently garnering everyone’s attention. According to reports, the need for a guardrail for this bridge has been a constant demand among locals for years. But the authorities are still silent and have not taken any steps till now. Reports suggest that at least one suicide occurs here every month. It is easy to jump from the bridge into the river because of the low handrail. Sometimes, due to the timely intervention of the locals, many people have turned away from suicide.

According to locals, many people ended their lives on this bridge by suicide because of a wrong thought. If there was a protective fence across the bridge, then they would have thought twice before taking this drastic step. Overall, they would have had a chance to reconsider their decision.

Locals said that they are also fed up with demanding a protective fence in front of the authorities. If a protective fence is not built here, the number of suicide cases may increase in the coming days.

Earlier, there was a report that a 30-year-old man committed suicide by jumping off the bridge into the Vamanapuram river at Attingal. The person was identified as Santhosh Kumar, son of the late Mohan and Saraswathy Amma, and was a resident of Madavoor.

According to the police, around 12.30 pm, Santhosh came to Poovanpara Bridge near Attingal by bus. He arrived there after parking his bike at a nearby place. After which Santhosh jumped off the bridge into the river without hesitation, leaving a message behind. The locals at the spot alerted the police and Fire and Rescue Services, and he was pulled out of the water by the Fire and Rescue team immediately. He was brought to the Taluk Hospital in Chirayinkeezhu, but he was declared dead on arrival.
