Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said he would make all efforts to convince the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) about the inability of Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu in the meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday.
He told reporters here that he would be leaving for New Delhi on Monday itself. State Minister for Water Resources Basavaraj Bommai would hold discussions with senior advocates Fali Nariman and Mohan Katarki representing Karnataka in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, he said.
Shettar said he would carry to Delhi all necessary documents supporting Karnataka’s argument that water from the Cauvery was not enough for release to Tamil Nadu as 40 taluks in the Cauvery basin were declared drought-hit. Asked whether the decision of the Cauvery River Authority was binding on the state, Shettar said he had the confidence that the CRA would understand the state’s problems.
Shettar also said Basavaraj Bommai would also attend the CRA meeting along with him. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitaa and Water Resources Minister would also participate in the meet, Shettar said.
Bommai told reporters that the Maharashtra government had expressed its inability to release water in Bhima river to help the people living on the banks of the river in Karnataka due to acute shortage of water in Ujani and Veerabhatkal dams. However, Karnataka had requested Maharashtra to release water at least for drinking purpose, the Chief Minister added.
If the Centre issued notification making it mandatory for all the states to release water, it would be helpful to all, he said. Housing Minister V Somanna was also present.
