Will mobile phones replace landlines? 'Absolutely not,' said Motorola
Back in 1973 Motorola was very categorical in rejecting the assumption that mobile phones cold replace landlines.

New Delhi: As it has happened with many inventions, Motorola back in 1973 did not foresee that in a few decades mobile phones would take over communication the world over. On April 3, 1973 Motorola's Martin Cooper made the first mobile phone call on a prototype of DynaTAC.

In the fact sheet that the company issued along with press release announcing the the Motorola DynaTAC demonstration on April 3, 1973 was very categorical in rejecting the assumption that portable telephones could replace standard telephones.

"Absolutely not. The portable phone is designed for use 'on the go,' when one is away from the office or home, where conventional telephones are not available," the Motorola DynaTAC fact sheet said. The company also did not expect the new device to do away with the now long redundant car phones.

While mobile phones subscriptions is surging, traditional landline phone usage have been on the decline. In the major markets of the world mobile phones have long overtaken landlines.
