CHENNAI: A woman was arrested on charges of cheating the members of a Self Help Group, to a tune of Rs 2 lakh, at Villivakkam on Tuesday.Police said, the complainant M Sethulakshmi (40) of Red Hills Road, alleged that her neighbour S Chitra (23) ran a finance company in Bharathi Nagar, Villivakkam. Believing Chitra, Sethulakshmi offered to procure small loans for her SHG members and collected Rs 1,500 from 24 persons and gave Rs 36,000 to Chitra as pre-payment. Similarly, another SHG member,Rajeswari, collected Rs 75,000 from 50 persons. A third member, Dhanalakshmi procured Rs 90,000 from 60 persons. All the money was handed over to Chitra. But, even as days passed, Chitra did not secure the promised loans and her husband, Selvam, resorted to issuing threats when asked about it. The police are on the lookout for him.Six Held for Illegal Sale of CrackersSix persons were arrested for the illegal sale of crackers in Esplanade, Parrys on Tuesday. The police arrested Kumar (28), Siddique (28), Bhaskar (24), Taubiq (23) and Mohammed (40) in this connection. As per a court order, crackers could be sold only at the Island Grounds.
