PUDUCHERRY: There are committed people in every sphere of society who keep the system going. A police constable at the Periya Kadai police station reiterated this when he helped a 70-year-old woman recover her handbag containing cash and ornaments, within an hour of her leaving it in an autorickshaw on Tuesday.Senior superintendent of police (Law and Order) V J Chandran said that Mary Fernandez, a resident of Jawahar Nagar, Bhoomianpet, went to the Directorate of Accounts and Treasury (DAT) in TV Nagar to collect her pension and then took an auto to reach Periya Kadai (Grand Bazaar) market.She exited the auto and after waking towards the market realised that she had forgotten the bag in the vehicle. She rushed to the Periya Kadai police station and registered a complaint.Constable Rajendran, who was on duty, rushed Mary to the TV Nagar autostand where she identified the auto and found her handbag exactly where she had left it. The driver of the auto did not notice the bag.The timely action of Rajendran helped Mary Fernandez recover the handbag, which contained seven sovereigns of gold ornaments and `5,500.SSP (L&O) Chandran formally handed over the bag to Mary Fernandez in the presence of Superintendent of Police N T Sivadasan and Circle Inspector Angappan. He praised constable Rajendran for his timely action.
