CHENNAI: For 53-year-old Tilagavathy, that fatal mishap was not actually the end of the road. She virtually continues to live on through six persons, thanks to her family’s decision to donate her organs. After Thilagavathy was declared brain dead, her vital organs were harvested by doctors at Apollo hospital. Her heart, two kidneys, liver and eyes were successfully transplanted on six people. Her hearts beats on inside a 63-year-old from Mumbai, who received it two weeks ago, becoming the oldest women to receive a transplant in India.Dr Prathap C Reddy, chairman, Apollo Hospitals, told reporters, “There is a long queue of people who are waiting for organ transplants. A timely decision can save many lives... The transplants that happen at Apollo follows all protocols making it completely legal.”Tamil Nadu took a top slot in India in terms of cadaver transplants, he said adding, “In the last two years, there has been a tremendous improvement in the number of cadaver organ transplants in TN. This year 175 organ transplants have taken place. This is a huge improvement from 60, just two years ago.”
