Over the last seven years, a typical female millionaire's fortune in UK has increased by about £7 lakh.

London: Nearly 70,000 women in Britain are now worth at least £1 million, compared to more than one lakh men and their number if growing faster than their male counterparts.

This figure includes everything from the value of their home, the money in their savings account and their stock market investments.

Over the last year, the number of women who are millionaires has been growing at 11 per cent, ahead of men at 9.7 per cent.

A typical female millionaire is worth about £2 million, according to the report from the investment firm Brewin Dolphin Wealth management.

Men have a bigger fortune with an average of £3 million - but women are catching up fast.

Over the last seven years, a typical female millionaire's fortune has increased by about £7 lakh compared to just £2 lakh for a man.

The largest chunk of their fortunes is tied up in property, about 30 per cent, followed by about 25 per cent in securities, typically shares.

To be accurate, the report has subtracted their liabilities, such as their mortgages, which means they are "proper millionaires", not just "pretend property millionaires."

If the value of people's home was included, without taking away their huge home loans, many more people would be millionaires, particularly in the South.

Martin Smith, chief executive of Brewin dolphin Wealth Management, said the rise is largely due to the increase in the number of working women.

Unlike their mothers and grandmothers, more and more women today have high-flying careers, with soaring numbers setting up their own firms.

More than 70 per cent of mothers who are married or living with a boyfriend now go out to work, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Besides women live longer, which means they inherit a large amount of money from their husbands who typically die first.

Another reason is that women are simply better investors, and have typically made their money grow quicker than men in recent times.

The most recent Sunday Times Rich List includes 77 women, including Tina Green, wife of the 'king of the high-street' Philip Green.

Last year, she was paid a record-breaking £1.2 billion dividend for her stake in Arcadia, the high-street clothing empire which includes Top Shop.

Other winners are Julie Pankhurst, the woman who dreamed up the idea for Friends Reunited, the cult website recently sold for £175 million.

When pregnant, she thought it would be fun to find out what her old school friends were doing, and eventually persuaded her husband to set up a website.

Another millionaire is Tamara Mellon, the glamorous shoe tycoon, who is worth £60 million after the sale of the Jimmy Choo business.

A new entrant is Cynthia Caroll, 49, an American named yesterday as the new head of one of Britain's biggest companies.

The mother-of-four is taking the reins at Anglo American, the mining giant, with a pay package worth z3 million.
