CHENNAI: City students observed Wednesday as the World Peace Day as declared by the United Nations. They took a pledge to contribute to maintaining world peace. A function was held at the Quaid-E-Millat Government College to commemorate the event, and educational assistance was provided to needy students by members of the Lions Club of Madras.P Rajamanikam, District Governor of the Lions Club said that women were integral to maintaining world peace. “Education to a girl means education to an entire family,” he said.Speaking later, A Kulasekaran, Chairman of the Railway Rates Tribunal said, “If India could establish peace with its neighbours, it need not spend 13 per cent of its annual budget allocation on defence. It is no way useful to the development of the country and is also inevitable due to strained border issues with neighbours. If peace is ensured with neighbours, India as well as those neighbouring countries can divert the millions spent on defence for developmental purposes.”The Lions club members, as a part of the function, donated five computers to the college and students as educational assistance.
