Dhaka: Bangladesh's Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has said he is mentally ready to join politics "if the people and civil society want." Terming the present situation 'new' one, Yunus said this is the high time "to start politics from a new angle," The Daily Star newspaper said.
The 'new' situation he referred to is the cancellation of the contentious general elections last month and the presence of a caretaker government that has applied curbs on political activity, but is also conducting a drive against corruption.
Yunus told media at the airport on return from a 10-day visit to India and Bahrain: "People will decide the right time" of his joining politics and forming a political party. His observations could be a sounding board to the country's opinion makers and the public at large when the country is undergoing a national emergency," political analysts said.
Yunus has been the national icon since he received Nobel Peace Prize last year. He sought to counsel the country's squabbling political parties during the run up to the polls in a bid to unite, to ensure smooth and fair polls and share power in a National Government. But there were no takers for his formula.
Yunus approved of the steps being taken by the caretaker government of Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed. He said that the people "have breathed a sigh of relief following declaration of the state of emergency in the country," United News of Bangladesh (UNB) news agency said.
Corruption should be eradicated from everywhere and there should be some changes in electoral laws disqualifying the corrupt people from contesting the election, Yunus said.
