Ahmedabad Expressing ignorance about the whereabouts of Zaheera Sheikh, the key witness in the Best Bakery case, her counsel Atul Mistry on Wednesday said she has not been in touch with him "since last six months."
"Since the Supreme Court verdict against her, she is not in touch with me. I do not know her whereabouts. It is for the police to trace her," he said.
Noting that law has to take its own course now, Mistry said, "Zaheera has not phoned me in the past six months".
The Supreme Court sentenced one-year simple imprisonment and Rs 50,000 fine to Zaheera for contempt of court after accepting the report of the high-powered committee, which indicted her as "self-condemned liar".
According to legal experts, this is the first case where a riot victim has been sentenced for perjury.
The court also asked the income tax department to freeze her bank accounts and ascertain her source of income since year 2000.
