The ruling Zanu-PF party has endorsed President Robert Mugabe as its candidate for the 2008 election.

New Delhi: In Zimbabwe, the ruling Zanu-PF party has endorsed President Robert Mugabe as its candidate for the 2008 election.

Mugabe has accused the main Opposition party of mounting a terrorist campaign to remove him from office and defended a violent police crackdown on Opposition demonstrations this month.

He has been in power since 1980, when Zimbabwe became independent.

Mugabe has called for greater unity in the ruling party and among Zimbabweans for the country to withstand what he called the latest political onslaught from the West.

"If Zimbabwe is not to be a colony again, then our party has to be strong, united, vigilant and remain in a state of preparedness, " he was quoted by news agencies as saying.

He reiterated that the fight between Zimbabwe and Britain was based on the land reform program the country embarked on in 2000.
