Navya Naveli Nanda REACTS To Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: 'It's Very Easy For Us To Just Sit And...'
Navya Naveli Nanda speaks on the Kolkata rape-murder case, calling for accountability and safer environments for women, stating, 'women deserve better, she deserved better.'

Entrepreneur and Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, addressed the disturbing Kolkata rape and murder case, shedding light on societal and systemic failures surrounding violence against women. At the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2024, on September 26, during a session titled ‘Beyond the Legacy: Gen Z for a Just and Equal India,’ Navya emphasised the need for collective accountability and the urgent demand for safer environments for women.

“The incident in Kolkata is not a first. It’s something that we’ve seen happen multiple times. It was outrageous and horrific. We, as a country—women, people, and society—demand law enforcement and stricter protocols, but it is very easy for us to just sit and make demands,” Navya stated.

She emphasised the necessity for a shared sense of responsibility, noting that societal change cannot happen in isolation. “We have to be accountable and responsible as members of society. It is an equal responsibility to create a safe environment for women, not just at work, but even at home. As members of society, we should play our part in that. Strong women deserve better, and she deserved better. No one should have the power to override her rights,” Navya continued.

The Kolkata case refers to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was found on August 9. The accused was arrested shortly after, but the crime shook the nation and reignited discussions on the safety of women in public spaces.

Apart from her impassioned plea for justice, Navya also reflected on her academic journey at IIM Ahmedabad, expressing gratitude for the education and opportunities she has received. “India has some of the finest institutions in the world, and being a part of IIM Ahmedabad is incredible. I feel fortunate to be under the guidance of some of the best professors in the world.”

Navya also acknowledged the criticism she often faces due to her privileged background. “I accept that I come from a very different lived reality. People will always have something to say about that,” she remarked, though she remains focused on her personal and professional growth.
