Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is a significant and joyous festival celebrated by Buddhists worldwide. On this auspicious occasion, Buddhists celebrate the life and teachings of Lord Buddha, his birthday and the day he attained enlightenment (nirvana).
Celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion in India, Buddha Purnima is also observed in numerous countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, China, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Tibet.
The month of Vaisakha in the Buddhist and Hindu calendars, as well as the Vikram Samvat calendar, marks Buddha’s moksha and his birthday. This important event is calculated based on the lunisolar calendar prevalent in Asia.
Buddha Purnima is usually celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Vaisakha in the Buddhist calendar and is held in the regions associated with the life of the Buddha, namely modern-day India and Nepal. While the date of Lord Buddha’s birthday varies annually in the Western Gregorian calendar, it usually falls in April or May. In 2024, this auspicious day falls on Thursday, May 23.
According to Drik Panchang, the timings for Buddha Purnima are as follows:
Purnima Tithi Begins: May 22, 2024, at 6:47 AM
Purnima Tithi Ends: May 23, 2024, at 7:22 PM
Auspicious time for baths and donations: 4:04 AM to 5:26 AM on May 23
Auspicious time for worshipping Lord Vishnu: 10:35 AM to 12:18 PM
Kashi astrologer Pandit Sanjay Upadhyay said that on the day of Buddha Purnima, one should take a bath in a holy river or Ganga in the morning. After the bath, one should offer Arghya to Lord Sun and then sprinkle black sesame seeds in the flowing water. Apart from this, one should donate to the needy or Brahmins as one wishes on this day. Lord Vishnu is pleased with this and gives blessings to the devotees.
Pandit Upadhyay also shared that Chandradev should also be worshipped on the day of Buddha Purnima. On this day, one should offer Arghya to Him at the moonrise in the night. This will remove devotees’ financial problems.
