Earlier this year, when the Hema Commission Report was made public, it created ripples in the Malayalam film industry. Multiple instances of sexual misconduct and powerplay came to the fore which had some serious repercussions. One of them was the stepping down of the entire governing body of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).
Two stalwarts of the film industry, Mohanlal and Mammootty also resigned from the organisation. Their resignations followed Prithviraj Sukumaran’s allegations that AMMA did not take the survivors’ complaints seriously and after Vice President Jagadish said these were isolated incidents and did not necessitate an investigation.
Now, after almost two months of their resignation, actress Zeenath has posted an open letter on Facebook, requesting Mohanlal and Mammootty to come back to AMMA. She has said that it is nearly impossible to think of AMMA without both of them. “Mammootty and Mohanlal do not need AMMA to reach people. Both of them have achieved name and fame beyond what can be achieved in this short life. On the contrary, the organisation needs you. Every person in AMMA needs you and needs your service. You are two trees with big branches, and many people are waiting to sit in the shade under them. So Mohanlal should come back as the leader of the organisation," she wrote. Zeenath said that she cannot even think of AMMA which is not led by Mammootty and Mohanlal as a collective force.
She also wrote about how and when AMMA was formed and how privileged she has been to be a member of the organization for so long. She also spoke about how it was wrong for people to expect that Mohanlal and Mammootty would be answerable for the wrongdoings of the accused in multiple cases. She also raised objections towards the accusations against AMMA, pointing out that the organization decided to provide medicine worth Rs 2,000 to its members when the new committee was formed, asking which other organization did the same.
