After a gap of 23 years since their iconic performance in the original 2001 film Nayak: The Real Hero, Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji are reportedly reuniting for the film’s sequel. The original movie, which left a lasting impact with its compelling narrative and powerful performances, has garnered a cult following over the years.
A source close to the production house shared that the film will pick up where the first part was left. Producer Mukut revealed the same and also spoke about Anil and Rani’s pairing. He also shared that the team will be making an announcement. Reportedly, the screenplay is a work in progress, and they are planning to ‘retain’ Anil and Rani’s respective roles.
Mukut spoke to Mid-day and wrote, “We are planning the sequel and taking the story forward with the [existing] characters. I bought the rights a long time ago from producer AM Rathnam. We are writing the script right now with the leads in mind and [incorporating] other actors too. As soon as the writing is complete, we’ll decide the way ahead. We have a couple of directors in mind, but nobody has been finalized.”
He further added that the initial discussions had already begun with Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. Regarding the introduction of new actors in the sequel, he mentioned that it hinges on how the characters evolve and which actors would be the best fit for them.
According to a source cited by the news portal, the sequel is set to pick up the storyline from where it left off, delving into the aftermath of Shivaji and his family’s tenure in power. The source further indicated that Nayak 2 will delve into themes of corruption, bureaucracy, and, most importantly, the influence of the masses.
Nayak, a political thriller, was a remake of director Shankar’s own Tamil movie Mudhalvan. The film
found its true audience when it became a fixture on television, being telecast repeatedly for several years after its release. Alongside Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji, the film also starred Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, and Johnny Lever.
