Those who have watched Beyond Bollywood at Kingdom of Dreams would agree that the musical offers an interesting blend of incredible dance cultures and a vibrant story that every Indian can relate to. Following the dance journey of its protagonists Shaily and Raghav is almost like finding meaning to our dreams and being determined in our efforts to turn them into reality.
Beyond Bollywood had opened at the London Palladium and played successfully in Europe and Algeria, and is currently being staged at the Kingdom of Dreams since last November. The musical has been conceived, choreographed and directed by Rajeev Goswami.
We spoke to lyricist by Irfan Siddiqui about the tremendous appreciation it has managed to received and a lot more.
Incredible response to Beyond Bollywood
Response to Beyond Bollywood has always been really good. This is the reason why it has run for so many months. Initially, we thought we would have a small run, but then it was decided that we put it up for a longer period.
Concept is unique
Beyond Bollywood has a different concept which was derived by Rajeev Goswami. Internationally, India has left an indelible impact, courtesy Bollywood. But when it comes to musicals, we don’t have any to take pride in. India is still lagging behind. We thought we’d create a musical as impactful as what we have seen in the West and enter the market too. This musical was originally made for foreign market.
Musicals in India are different
The major difference between the musicals that are staged abroad and in India lies in the concept. Musicals abroad are all about live singing. But if you watch Beyond Bollywood, you’d realise that the voltage of dancing is so high that it is impossible for the artistes to sing live. Also Beyond Bollywood isn’t just about Bollywood songs, Salim Suleiman have given it several original tracks which make it so unique.
