Choreographer-director Farah Khan and director Sajid Khan are mourning the loss of their mother, Menaka Irani, who passed away last week in Mumbai. Menaka Irani, who was also the sister of renowned child actors Daisy Irani and Honey Irani (Farhan and Zoya Akhtar’s mother and Javed Akhtar’s first wife), had a brief acting stint herself. She starred in the 1963 film ‘Bachpan’ alongside her sister Daisy. According to reports, Menaka had been battling an illness for some time before her passing.

A week after her death, a prayer meet was held at Zoya Akhtar’s home, attended by friends and family. Farah Khan made her first public appearance since her mother’s passing, appearing sombre and briefly smiling for the paparazzi before hurrying away with her children. Attendees included Karan Johar, Bhavna Panday, Ananya Panday, Maheep Kapoor with daughter Shanaya Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar with wife Shibani Akhtar.

The heartbreaking news of Menaka Irani’s passing came just days after she celebrated her birthday. On July 12, Farah Khan shared a heartfelt post on social media to honor her mother’s special day. In the touching pictures, Farah was seen holding her mother’s hand, both of them smiling warmly for the camera. One of the photos was a nostalgic monochrome shot.

Farah Khan had previously shared how she, her brother Sajid, and their mother Menaka Irani navigated the financial hardships following the death of their father, Kamran Khan, due to alcoholism. Reflecting on those challenging times, Farah had revealed to Radio Nasha, “Yes, I belonged to a filmy family, but by the time I turned five, we were the poor cousins. We’d lost all our money, dad’s film had flopped. We had a riches-to-rags story. So, while the rest of the family was thriving, we became the charity cases. Sajid, our mother, and I were supported by our relatives, who graciously let us stay in their house.”
